The Trichomoniasis sexually transmitted disease

Trichomoniasis is an infection caused by a single-celled parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. In men, it affects the urethra (tube that brings the urine out from the body).

The parasite is one of the most common STD, and it is transmitted by unprotected sexual relationship with an infected partner, during vaginal, oral or anal sex. Sometimes, bacteria can be transmitted by using infected sex toys or towels.

Most infected men do not present any symptoms, but some of them can see some changes like:

  • - a white penis discharge
  • - pain and discomfort during the urination and sexual penetration
  • - irritation and rashes around penis

First symptoms usually appear after 4 to 20 days after the moment of infection. In this moment, the pacient have to visit a doctor: Trichomoniasis usually occurs with other STDs, as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis or even HIV, and it is harder to detect in men than in women. If the urine test shows a Trichomoniasis infection, a treatment that includes antibiotics will cure it.

The disease will disappear anyway without treatment in few weeks, but an infected man cand continue to infect partners, even if the symptoms are missing.

That’s why both partners should be treated in the same time. Sexual relationships has to be completely avoided untill the treatment is finished.

A stabile monogamous relationship and the usage of condoms are 2 ways of avoiding Trichomoniasis.
